My post is not about the upcoming Desiring God National Conference, although I am sure it will be great. I really just like the drawing of John Calvin.
As I am working my way through Calvin’s Institutes this year I have come back to his teachings on why God was given so many names in the Old Testament, and how it helps his people steer clear of idolatry.
For as I have said before, such is our inclination to vanity, with rash boldness that, as soon as God’s name is mentioned, our mind is unable to refrain from lapsing into some absurd invention. Therefore God, willing to provide a remedy for this evil adorns his divinity with sure titles, and so fences us in, as it were, that we may not wander hither and thither and rashly contrive for ourselves some new god– if, having abandoned the living God, we sup an idol.
God in his graciousness has told us much about who he is and his attributes through his names. This precious knowledge protects us from our propensity (especially as “have it your way” Americans) to make a god that we like.
Immanuel- God with Us
That alone should sustain and nourish your soul.
